HSBC Bank Malta plc is the leading international banking and financial services group in Malta. It provides a comprehensive range of financial services – including Wealth and Personal Banking and Wealth Management, Commercial Banking and Global Markets – which are designed to meet the expanding requirements of its large client base of personal and corporate customers.

HSBC Malta also operates two subsidiaries, namely HSBC Life Assurance (Malta) Limited, a company authorised by the Malta Financial Services Authority to carry on the business of insurance in Malta under the Insurance Business Act (chapter 403, Laws of Malta). It offers a range of protection and investment life assurance products which are distributed mainly through HSBC Bank Malta, which is enrolled as a tied insurance intermediary under the Insurance Distribution Act of the Laws of Malta.

The other subsidiary, HSBC Global Asset Management (Malta) Limited, is a wholly owned subsidiary which is also regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority. It has an investment Services Licence and is principally engaged in the asset management of Collective Investments Schemes and Discretionary Portfolio Mandates.

Being a member of the HSBC Group, HSBC Malta has access to a global network and expertise which enable it to offer access to international markets and opportunities, facilitating global trade and investment for both personal and business clients.

Our history in Malta

  • In 1864, the Anglo-Egyptian Bank in Malta was founded
  • In 1925, Barclays Bank Dominion Colonial Overseas was founded after acquiring the Colonial. This had previously merged with the Anglo-Egyptian Bank and the National Bank of South Africa. Its name changed to Barclays Bank International in 1971
  • In 1975, Barclays Bank International was nationalised as Mid-Med Bank Ltd
  • In 1999, HSBC bought 70.03 per cent of Mid-Med Bank
  • In 2006, HSBC Global Call Centre was established in Malta
  • In 2018, HSBC was the first bank in Malta to launch fingerprint recognition and Face ID technology
  • In 2020, HSBC introduces measures to support personal and business customers affected by the Covid-19 pandemic
  • In 2021, the 80 Mill Street branch opened which represented a new way of banking, designed to offer convenience and flexibility
  • In 2022, HSBC Malta Group’s direct shareholding transferred from HSBC Europe B.V. to HSBC Continental Europe to align with EU regulatory requirements
  • In 2024, the HSBC Hub in Qormi was inaugurated, welcoming its first employees and clients. The building has sustainability firmly embedded at the centre of its design
  • In 2024, HSBC Bank Malta celebrated its 25th anniversary of operations in Malta and Gozo
